We've got many neighborhood watches already set up, but there's still many blocks left uncovered. If you're interested in starting a neighborhood watch on your block, it's really quite simple. All you have to do is: Step 1) Find 6 interested neighbors (not 6 households; 6 people). Also find a location for a meeting which has a DVD player connected to a TV, for the presentations. Step 2) Contact Brenda Ivey at the Community Services Coordinator's office, 510-777-8555. You'll need to set up 2 meetings which can be attended by all 6 interested parties PLUS someone from the Community Services Coordinator's office. The meetings must be scheduled between Monday and Thursday, at either 6:30 or 7:00 PM.
Step 3) Once the group has had both meetings and elected a block captain, the city will start the process of getting Neighborhood Watch street signs for the area. Once you have your group set up, the group sets its own priorities. If there isn't an immediate crime problem, the group could arrange social events to include more neighbors, work on beautifying the area, take the CORE training, or whatever seems appropriate. Organized Neighborhood Watch groups are encouraged to have a block party the first Tuesday in August, for National Night Out. There will also be a Neighborhood Watch "summit" in May, to which groups can invite their neighbors. Here's a list of blocks and streets known to have neighborhood watches setup.
