When Crime Occurs

Report a crime If you see a crime in progress, call the police!

Only call 911 from a land line! Cell phone calls to 911 go directly to CHP in Martinez and have to be forwarded.

From a cell phone call 510-777-3211 which routes directly to OPD dispatch.

To report a crime that has already happened:

Call the non-emergency number 510-777-3333, or fill in OPD's Online Crime Reporting form. You'll find the link on their Report a Crime page. We've been warned that the form is easier to fill out on a laptop or desktop than it is on a smartphone.

For MEDICAL OR FIRE EMERGENCIES ONLY, call the Fire Department directly at 510-444-1616. They respond faster than OPD.

We will have speakers from Safer Rockridge, the non-profit which has been formed to manage the contract, and we hope to have a representative from the current security firm under contract, Premiere Protective Services. KALW News has created an hour long video documentary on how 911 works, and doesn’t work, in Oakland. I’ve been listening to audio excerpts the last couple of days on the radio station, and this is a fascinating account, well worth an hour of anybody’s time who is interested in the subject. Here’s the link to the documentary on KALW’s site:

We've also posted a link to this documentary on our web page, Calling 911.
